Microsoft HoloLens has been one of the industry’s leading AR headsets. Its HoloLens headset served as the basis for attempts to design combat goggles for the US military. Unfortunately for Microsoft, early tests showed the HoloLens led to “mission-affecting physical impairments” in 80% of soldiers after less than three hours. As a result, Congress put a hold on further funding until significant improvements could be made, resulting in the improved IVAS (Integrated Visual Augmentation System) devices that Microsoft began delivering to the US Army in mid 2023.

According to UploadVR, Microsoft is now telling partners and customers they should buy up existing stock before it runs out, and has confirmed to the outlet that it has stopped production of the HoloLens 2. Support for the device will end January 1, 2028, but the devices will receive “updates to address critical security issues and software regressions” till December 31, 2027.

There is no apparent successor on the roadmap, although Microsoft told UploadVR that it remains “fully committed” to the HoloLens IVAS, the device the military is testing.

The Mixed Reality Problem

The news should come as no real surprise, as the mixed reality industry has continued to struggle. After its disappointments with the HoloLens, Microsoft engaged in multiple rounds of layoffs in the mixed reality team, even reportedly eliminating the entire development team.

Microsoft is not the only company to struggle, with Apple’s Vision Pro not living up to the hype or the company’s expectations. In fact, the Vision Pro looks to be the closest thing Apple has had to a product flop since the much-maligned Apple Cube.

Mixed reality devices seem to struggle from three main issues:

  • Price: Price remains one of the biggest obstacles to widespread adoption of mixed reality devices. For example, Apple’s Vision Pro starts at $3,499 and goes up to $3,899. For that price, a user can purchase a well-equipped M-series Mac that’s ultimately far more capable for day-to-day tasks.
  • Use Cases: In many ways, mixed reality devices are still solutions looking for a problem. While there’s definitely a novelty factor, and some tasks may seem more natural, there are still few situations in which a mixed reality device trumps a standard computer for most tasks.
  • Physical Side Effects: Microsoft’s issues with the military’s use of the HoloLens are by no means an isolated account. Many users report nausea, headaches, and other symptoms when using virtual reality, augmented reality, and mixed reality devices, especially for any substantial length of time. In contrast, those same users can use a computer for hours at a time without any such symptoms.

Ultimately, until the industry is able to solve these problems, HoloLens will likely not be the last device to be shuttered.

The news also comes after Microsoft laid off hundreds of employees in mid-June, with the mixed reality division being one those impacted. Despite the layoffs, Microsoft said it remained committed to its mixed-reality endeavors.

“Earlier today we announced a restructuring of the Microsoft’s Mixed Reality organization,” a spokesperson said at the time. “We remain fully committed to the Department of Defense’s IVAS program and will continue to deliver cutting edge technology to support our soldiers. Apple seems to be taking a proactive stance with the Vision Pro, enabling third-party payment support even though the device has not yet been slapped with the gatekeeper label.

Apple made the announcement in a developer blog post:

Alternative payment options are now supported starting in visionOS 1.2 for apps distributed on the App Store in the EU.

As the company points out, this brings visionOS in line with the rest of the company’s platforms:

To reflect the DMA’s changes, developers will have new options for digital goods and services transactions in their apps distributed on the App Store in the EU across iOS, iPadOS, macOS, tvOS, visionOS, and watchOS. This includes the ability to use alternative payment service providers for in‑app purchases and linking out to their webpage to complete transactions.

Despite its efforts to comply with the DMA as it applies to the App Store, the EU Commission has issued a preliminary ruling that Apple is still not in compliance.

“Today is a very important day for the effective enforcement of the DMA: we have sent preliminary findings to Apple. Our preliminary position is that Apple does not fully allow steering,” Margrethe Vestager, the EU’s competition chief, said at the time. “Steering is key to ensure that app developers are less dependent on gatekeepers’ app stores and for consumers to be aware of better offers. We have also opened proceedings against Apple in relation to its so-called core technology fee and various rules for allowing third party app stores and sideloading. The developers’ community and consumers are eager to offer alternatives to the App Store. We will investigate to ensure Apple does not undermine these efforts.”

While Apple now has an opportunity to defend itself and possibly overturn the preliminary ruling, failure to successfully do so could result in massive fines.

In view of the stakes, it’s little wonder Apple opted to enable third-party payment support for visionOS…even if the EU is not yet requiring it.

According to AppleInsider, developers want to create apps for Apple’s new Vision Pro “spatial computer” will not be able to rely entirely on Intel-based machines. Release notes for Xcode 15.1 beta (Apple’s development environment) make clear that an M-series Mac will be required to unlock all of the visionOS simulator’s features.

While some features may still work on Intel, Apple is clearly not willing to invest extra effort or resources to make the simulator fully compatible with Intel chips. It’s hard to argue with the company’s position, as it is clearly all-in on its own custom silicon.

As AI points out, this is yet another warning sign to owners of Intel-based Macs that the days Apple supporting their hardware are quickly coming to a close.

The company confirmed to Engadget that it will deliver 20 IVAS (Integrated Visual Augmentation System) 1.2 devices in July, with Bloomberg saying the Army intends to begin testing them in late August.

As Engadget points out, much is riding on these tests, especially for Microsoft. If the company has not resolved the issues with motion sickness, it will likely lose the Army contract, casting doubt on the overall project.

Augmented and mixed reality are among the hottest sectors in tech, with Apple, Google, Meta, Microsoft, and others investing heavily in its development. Unfortunately for Google, the company has not had as clear a focus or direction as some of its rivals.

Lucovsky says he is leaving the company, confirming what many suspected about Google’s focus.

I have decided to step away from my role at Google, where I was Senior Director of Engineering, responsible for OS and Software Platform for AR and XR devices. The recent changes in AR leadership and Google’s unstable commitment and vision have weighed heavily on my decision.

Moving forward, I am eager to explore opportunities that allow me to further advance Augmented Reality technology and its intersection with generative AI. I approach the next chapter with enthusiasm and anticipation for the exciting possibilities that lie ahead.

Google has seemingly struggled to execute on more than one major front. The company was caught flat-footed by Microsoft’s foray into AI, and subsequently rushed its own development, much to the consternation of its employees.

Being called out by one of its own executives for its “unstable commitment and vision” to AR/XR is not likely to assuage critics’ concerns that Google and CEO Sundar Pichai can successfully execute.

Since the App Store is the only distribution method for iOS apps, Apple created TestFlight as a way for developers to beta test their apps and get feedback from users. With the upcoming Vision Pro, Apple has added support for visionOS in TestFlight.

In addition, TestFlight now supports visionOS apps for internal and external testing, as well as testing iOS and iPadOS apps on visionOS.

The addition is good news for developers and will help them get their apps ready for Apple’s ‘spacial computer.’

The company’s showing at WWDC has caught the attention of Wedbush, especially in the context of the Apple’s ability to leverage its ecosystem to boost the Vision Pro, with the firm calling it a “revolutionary product,” according to Business Insider.

“Apple playing chess while others play checkers. In FY24 the Cupertino stalwart is on pace to approach $100 billion in annual services revenue growing double digits which is a jaw dropping trajectory vs. the roughly $40 billion+ of services revenue that Apple was delivering only in FY20,” Wedbush said, according to Yahoo.

Apple unveiled its Vision Pro AR/VR headset at WWDC yesterday. Early reviews indicate the company could have another hit on its hands, but Apple is certainly not resting on its laurels.

According to The Verge, Mira CEO Ben Taft posted to his private Instagram account to reveal that his company had been purchased by Apple. He also revealed that Apple hired 11 of Mira’s employees.

Mira has contracts with the US Air Force, the US Navy, and Nintendo World. Apple is notoriously close-lipped about why it purchased companies, but Mira clearly has something the company views as important to its future plans.
